The President of United States, Donald Trump on April 2, 2018 declared dead the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protected immigrants brought to the nation illegally as children.

Earlier in September 2017, President Trump had said that he would terminate the DACA program, which was introduced by his predecessor Barack Obama. Trump however, gave the Congress time until March 6 to replace the program.

Although Congress failed to meet the deadline, the courts ruled that the program can stay in place for now.

Speaking through a twitter post, President Trump said that DACA is dead because the Democrats did not care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon.

According to senior administration officials, legislation aimed at helping expedite some deportations of immigrants in the country illegally was being prepared. However, they did not provide a timetable for submitting it to the Congress and did not say whether provisions to help DACA recipients would be included.

On the other hand, the Democrats blamed Trump for the fragile status of a program that shielded thousands of immigrants, often called ‘Dreamers’, from deportation and gave them work permits.
